GTHL Game Review –Toronto Red Wings 2:3 Toronto Marlboros – AAA Bantam 05’

The GTHL opener saw the Toronto Red Wings clashing with the Toronto Marlboros at the Chesswood 1.
The Red Wings were facing one of the most consistent teams in the league for the past few seasons.

The Red Wings were the underdogs in this game. But that they had a strong start. Forward Cole Cooksey made a few shots on goal. Also, Cole McKenna defended well and goaltender Poma looked solid at the net. Moreover, defencemen Nir Sigalov had a couple of Kronwall style tackles. However, they were also under pressure in certain parts of the first period. Goaltender Poma made 9 saves in the first 15 minutes of the game. 

In the 2nd period of the game, the Red Wings had a great start. Moreover, they dominated the middle of the ice and that resulted in two consecutive goals by flamboyant forward Jayden Gonsalves. A great celly followed and it seemed that they or the right track to pull out a great surprise on an opening day. Also, they came close to add a 3rd goal, but the M’boros goaltender was unbeatable. 
In the 2nd part of the 2nd period, the Red Wings dropped their pace and their opponents took control of the game. That resulted in constant pressure and the M’r Boros capitalized on their good puck possession with two goals.

The Red Wings were still in the game and with a score of 2-2, they had plenty to play for in the 3rd period.
The battled with their opponents but Kirk, Read and Davies’s shots were all saved by the M’boros goaltender. The Red Wings were not able to withstand the creative play of their opponents and conceded the 3rd goal from a counter-attack. The Red Wings lost 3-2, but they showed some outstanding performances in this opening game of the season.

The M’Boros is one of the best teams in the league. Moreover, the expectation was that this game will be a routine win for them. However, their opponents played well in the first period of the game. Also, the Toronto side came close to score through Barlow and Castagna. Also, defenders Francesco Dell’Elce and Tristan Bertucci were rock solid at the back. Goaltender Andreas Nikitopoulos was like an iron dome at goal. The 5’8″ goalie managed to pull 5 saves to keep the score open in the first period of the game.

In the 2nd period of the game, the M’Boros dropped a little bit and their opponents played really well. That resulted in 2 conceded goals. Therefore, the Toronto side had plenty of work to do in the rest of the game. However, their response was really good. In-form Goaltender Nikitopoulos was making some crucial saves again and slowly the M’Boros took control of the game. McDonald managed to score a goal from a close range after a good run by Grisolia.
Also, Barlow had a good opportunity to score, but he was yard sale tackled.  Nevertheless, Barlow looked determined to score and was successful in the next minute from a close range. 

In the 3rd period of the game, the Toronto side had to battle in order to get something out of this game. They looked more creative and their control of the biscuit was good. But it was through their talisman McDonald that they took a 3-2 in the game. The young forward managed to steal the puck and launched a quick counter-attack which resulted with a great, well-placed shot.  The M’Boros managed to prevail and won the game at the end. 

Final Thought
All in all, this was a great game opener of the season. Both teams went for it and it was interesting until the end. Also, both sides deserved to get something out of this game. Yet, the quality and the experience of the M’r Boros was the key for them winning this opening game of the season.
